Dealers reporting stock shortages

Despite all of the pressures caused by COVID 19 we are receiving reports that dealers across the country are reporting brisk business at the moment and a shortage of stock to replace recent sales. In some cases dealers are reporting business levels higher than prior to the outbreak of COVID 19 and they are struggling to find good stock to fill their showrooms.

Bonhams online Bicester sale appears to have gone well, but it has still provided some bargain classics for those seeking a pre war car. In particular we high light the Vauxhall 20/60 Fastback which has sold for just £23,625 including premium, a substantial discount to what these cars were selling for three to four years ago and even in today's money that still looks cheap.

Although the number of lots was limited in this sale and it was a timed auction without viewing it has thrown up a few interesting results for cars which are not far off bargain level. The lack of being able to view will undoubtedly have had an impact on the price people were prepared to pay for some of the cars.

After a Covid 19 induced delay, Richard Edmonds will be holding an online sale of some 500 lots of petroliana this coming Saturday. There is no viewing available, but you will be able to see several images of each item online and also request a Zoom viewing should you want to do so.

We have a plethora of auctions due to take place over the next month and Brightwells are next up kicking off a timed auction of cars today which will end after 12 noon on the 28th May. The sale is different to the others that are due over the coming weeks in that they have not allowed any viewing of the cars and bidders will have to rely on descriptions and other information provided by Brightwells.

Today's online auction at Silverstone Auctions appears to have gone very well and if anything shows the classic car market has felt a very limited impact from COVID 19. With 84% of the cars sold among which there have been some very good prices achieved.

We were pleased to hear that the Alan Marshall Humber museum's collection of 16 rare Humber cars along with a large collection of automobilia will remain in one place having been bought for a reported £180,000 via a sealed bid auction run by the auction house Hansons. The collection is likely to be re-housed in Nottingham where Humber has its origins.

The major auction houses are now starting to commit to dates for their next sales although exactly what format they may take is yet to be announced and it will depend on how lock down restrictions are eased over the coming weeks. Bonhams have a sale in just three weeks time and it may well be online and telephone only, but we will soon know.

Our pick of the bunch has to be the rare 1961 Ford Zephyr MKII Estate with coachwork by built by Abbots of Farnham.
