Silverstone Auctions

Silverstone Auctions latest sale on the 27th August generated some strong numbers which shows that no matter what the macroeconomic backdrop, the best cars with the originality and provenance will still command a premium price. Good examples are the 1980 MGB 1.8 Roadster with just 143 miles from new which made £21,937 quite a price for a rubber bumper car. A 1976 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo 3-litre made £123,750 which was an excellent result for a car which was a long way from low mileage with nearly 104,000 recorded miles. The fact that it is one of just one of only 74, UK-supplied, right-hand drive, 3-litre cars presented in black with olive green leather and on offer from 43 years single private ownership will have had something to do with the strong result. We note that 911 prices are continuing to climb despite weakness across many other areas of the classic car market. A 1989 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo LE with just 25,000 miles on the clock made Subaru continues to gather a strong following as evidenced by the £182,250 paid for a 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B-STI which had just 36,000 miles on the clock and one former keeper. A more modern classic, the 2001 Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R is commanding ever bigger numbers and this one was no exception achieving £94,500. The 1987 Toyota Corolla AE86 Twin-Cam is something of an oddball in looks, but no doubt the rarity factor helped this one to go on and achieve £50,625. A good example of how prices have fallen in recent years is the 1958 Jaguar XK150S Roadster which is one of 844 left hand drive cars and this one looks superb but still only achieved £95,000. We recall one of these making $300,000 plus at one point stateside in the boom years. Performance cars of the 90s are where the hot money is likely to travel over the coming years and what better an example than the £75,938 paid for a 1995 Audi RS2 which has just 33,748 miles on the clock, surely an auction record for one of these. Having a celebrity name attached to a car does not always guarantee an instant premium, but the 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL (W113) 'Pagoda' - ex Sir Stirling Moss OBE was always going to attract interest and that it did with a final price of £177,750. The same may also be said of a 1977 Volkswagen Beetle 1303 LS Cabriolet - ex-Roger Daltrey CBE which made a record £38,250. The car of the day was the Diana, Princess of Wales 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo S1 which made a huge £722,500. Finally, a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II which is one of just 500 cars made a very strong £155,250.
