Mathewsons
29 April 2023
A new record we suspect for a TR7 was generated by Mathewsons latest auction which achieved a significant £32,400. The car's claim to fame was its inclusion in the three series of the highly popular Detectorists comedy series which was written and starred in by Mackenzie Crook alongside Toby Jones. The car had the signatures of the cars on the underside of the boot lid. There was a Christmas special last year and the series popularity no doubt helped to propel this car's value to the heady levels of £30k plus.
Among other notable results in this auction are close to £66k paid for a 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 Roadster which is strong money for a Coupe and we suspect the colour combination for this car was particularly appealing along with a significant refurb and excellent panel gaps. A very nice looking Ford Escort XR3 did well at £16,350. A1990 Audi Quattro Turbo made close to £57k which is par for the course with these now. After a long period of price malaise among Austin Seven value, we do seem to be seeing renewed interest in these cars, especially the commercials with one such example doing very well in this sale, making £18,530.
Finally, the offshoot of Bangers and Cash which takes wrecks, documents their restoration for the programme and then re-sells them had decided to do a 1976 SAAB 96 V4 which they paid £3,100 for. The car has been treated to a significant restoration which judging from their past projects costs far more than the car sells for and in this case the car made a little under £25k which is probably world record pace. We will see in a future episode how much they made or lost!
