H&H held their latest auction at their oldest venue, The Pavillion Gardens in Buxton. The results are now available online. One is of particular interest, the £61,875 paid for a 1973 Jaguar E-Type V12 Coupe. This is undoubtedly a record for a series 3 Coupe at auction by some margin and is significant as it is well within Series 2 vaulation territory. This would undoubtedly have been a very nice car to command this valuation but it also confirms what we are seeing in the private and dealer ads in that what was the ugly duckling of the E-Type family is now very much sought after if the car is correct. So much so that values are almost up with Series 2 valuations now and in many cases asking prices are higher. What the reason for this is difficult to answer, but undoubtedly the V12 lump is very attractive to many buyers despite the added complications it brings, but also the longer wheelbase cars with 2+2 format are arguably more practical for those seeking a grand tourer. The V12 engine if well maintained can easily accomplish a six digit mileage with ease. It will be interesting to see if more auction results start to chase the number achieved for this car over the coming weeks and months.
