Highlights of Mathewsons sale

There are a few standout results from Mathewsons latest auction which took place over the weekend of the 18th/19th March. This includes a huge £25,886 paid for a 1973 Ford Cortina 1600L MK3 with 59,000 miles on the clock which was estimated at £6,500 to £8,500. This was not an isolated incident as another MK3 this time a 1976 2000E which had just 21,000 miles on the clock went on to make £18,601 against its estimate of £10,000 to £12,000. Two MGB GTs also shone through, both looked in superb condition, one was a 1972 car estimated at £9,000 to £10,000 which made £17,469. The other was a 1973 car which also looked lovely and was estimated at £10,000 to £11,000 but went on to make £17,468. It was surprising to see a 1947 MG TC which was basically sound but in need of total restoration make £17,308 especially when you can buy fully restored examples in the low 20s at the moment. Volvo P1800 values are still on the rise and if anything are playing catchup to the extreme valuations that are being paid for cars in the US. One such example in this sale which was an extremely nice 1968 P1800S made a significant £37,775 against its estimate of £24,000 to £27,000. The one restoration standout was the 1980 Vauxhall Chevette HS which was basically in need of everything but still made a strong £15,318.
