Silverstone Auctions

Silverstone Auctions took a brave gamble focusing a sale on pre war era cars which took place yesterday. It was certainly nice to see an auction house focus on what is becoming an increasingly unloved area of the market with demand for pre war cars continuing to wane. That said, cars that come from a recognisable manufacture generally still do well and that means cars that carry names such as Bentley or Jaguar for example. The sale itself included 32 car lots of which 11 sold at the last tally leaving a low sale rate. Perhaps not that unexpected given the era of cars and the fact the the economy is facing so much stress at the moment. The top sale went to a 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Tourer which made £585,000. As with many such Bentleys it was rebodied in the 70s and if it had still retained its original folding concealed head Coupé by Thrupp & Maberley it would almost certainly have commanded much more. Nevertheless the sale price was still a good result in the current market.
