Mathewsons

The latest Mathewsons auction provided some interesting results most of which once again demonstrate that there is still very strong demand for correct cars with originality commanding the biggest premium. We start with a Morris 1800 which achieved £10.100 against its estimate of £7,500 to £8,500. The car has 28,000 miles on the clock albeit not warranted but is clearly in superb condition. We haven't seen a standard 1800 achieve such a high price at auction although the S variant can command well in excess of £10k. Interest in Land Crabs has been rising for some time now and when you compare them to the prices people will pay for a Mini they still represent excellent value for money in our view. Other notable results include a 1959 Ford Zodiac estimated at £10,000 to £11,000 which made £13,330. A 1983 Mercedes 280SL which had just 9,000 miles from new and one owner from new had come from a deceased estate and made £46,280, A 1981 Ford Cortina MK5 2.0 GL Estate which was also just one owner from new which had been the subject of a recent refresh and presented in immaculate condition made £14,351. Avery nice 1970 Triumph TR6 made £23,180 which again shows how the median price for a good TR6 is now £20k to £25k. A 1963 Ford Corttina Delixe which was estimated at £10,000 to £12,000 made an estimate busting £16,662. Another estimate beating car was a 1978 Ford Escort MK2 RS2000 which made £32,525 against its estimate of £22,000 to £25,000. A 1929 lovely Morris Cowley Van and Caravan also comfortably beat its estimate of £12,000 to £15,000 with a final price of £18,275. A 1973 Ford Escort MK1 1300 Sport which was estimated at £15,000 to £16,000 made £20,694 which we believe is an auction record for a 1300. A Jaguar MK2 3.4 which had been the subject of an extensive restoration looked to have been conservatively estimated at £21,000 to £23,000 and this proved to be the case with a final value of just under £42,000. A 1965 Ford Cortina GT in Lotus Cortina colours which was estimated at £20,000 to £22,000 made £24,125. A 1980 Ford Escort MK2 with just 16,800 mile made a record breaking £18,813 for a 1.3.
