H&H
20 March 2019
The latest H&H auction provided mixed results with further confirmation that prices are weakening across a number of makes and models. A good example is the £29,250 paid for a Triumph TR5. Looking at the narrative and the photographs the car appears to be a long way off being a top example, but nevertheless it is running with a clean MOT. In recent years you would be hard pressed to find a TR5 advertised for much less than £40k and it is clear that values have tailed off in recent months along with Stags and the some of the earlier TR series. The Bristol 406 which had no reserve achieved a respectable £33,750 although again some way off what these cars were commanding at the market peak. Good cars are still making good prices though such as the Mercedes 250SL Pagoda which commanded £81,000 and was sold without reserve.Notable so sales which are probably down to optimistic price expectations were a Sunbeam Tiger (estimate £45,000-£55,000) and a Daimler Dart (estimate £40,000-£50,000). The £38,250 paid for a Daimler DB18 Sports Special was mid estimate, but still a very good price for one of these. A 1979 Aston Martin V8 Oscar India achieved £115,312.50 which was towards the top end of the estimate showing there is still plenty of demand for these cars which still look undervalue compared to the DB cars.A rare right hand drive 1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider which looks lovely surpassed its estimate at £123,750. One clear record was the £18,562.50 paid for a 1959 Sunbeam Rapier Series 2 which had just over 11,000 miles on the clock. The star of the show was the 1936 Bentley 4.5 Litre Vanden Plas Tourer which achieved more than double its estimate at £444,375. Another low mileage car in the sale was a 106 mile 1982 MGB GT which went on to achieve £14,062.50. This is an interesting result for anyone thinking of bidding on similar low mileage cars on the 23rd March at DT Matthewson.
