1970 Ford Transit MK1 Perkins Diesel van at CCA

We thought this van was worthy of mention as it demonstrates why a well restored classic that has been done to a high standard should command a premium valuation. This particular example was restored for the TV programme For the Love of Cars. The van still retains its Diesel Perkins engine and was clearly restored to a high standard. Now what would a genuine unrestored van showing its age command? It would most likely struggle to beat £10k and more likely comfortably lower. This van sold for a wapping £28,600 and why? Because of the time and money that has been spent on achieving a superb finished product which in a typical restoration shop would inevitably costs 10s of thousands to achieve. We often seen cars that have been subjected to serious restorations at premium prices and still way below what they would costs to restore receiving criticism because the perception is that the value is way above what it is worth! The reality is very different as it would cost far more than the asking price to achieve what the car now is. Next time you see a car that might well be priced above the average it is always worth considering what time and money it would cost to replicate that car or indeed in this instance a van. The reality is you are probably bagging a bargain and not paying a premium at all!!
