The Austin A40 Somerset was introduced to replace the Austin Devon range. It was a very curvy car and had a big brother called the A70 Hereford. The 1200 cc engine was mated to a 4 speed gearbox with synchromesh on 2nd., 3rd., and 4th. gears. Th.e gearchange lever was mounted on the steering column.
